Earlier this week, when Elliot was delirious with fever, he crawled into my bed wanting to snuggle. As we laid together and he coughed all over me and rubbed his nasty nose on my pillow, he said to me “Mom, I love you more than Trav and more than Dad.” I really needed to hear that since I was tired and could feel myself getting sick too.
Today, however, Elliot told me, “Mom, I love Dad three thousand and ninety-nine. And I love you a hundred.” I had no idea how he came up with those numbers. So I asked him, “Who fed you breakfast and lunch? Who let you stay home from school today (because he was still sick)? Who let you have ice cream for lunch? Who let you watch TV on the big screen? Who played hide and seek with you? Who played magnets with you? Who made a craft with you today? Who washed your sheets for you? Who cared so much that she gave you a bath today?” “You did,” he said, “but when Dad gets home he’s going to play Legos.” And that’s how Fletch got all those extra “units”. And Fletch can have them, because I do not like to play Legos.
