Repeat Performance

My brain is filling up with wonderful memories of these sweet little boys. One example is the cheerio stuck to the face. Those who already love this adorable picture from when Elliot was 1, please enjoy the photo of Travis attempting a cheerio pose of his own.

Welcome to the world, Baby Mitchell!

We are thrilled to welcome Baby Mitchell to the world this week. His proud Chicago cousins can’t wait to pounce on him … when he’s a little older. Until then, we’ll have to teach him the ways of BOYS.

Be sure to get good sleep at night. Monkeys are a snuggly sleepytime sidekick.

Soon you’ll be ready for the race track!

Sometimes you have to walk (or crawl) over people to get what you want.

Mitchell, this will be your view at first.

Sometimes you have to frown really hard to keep from crying.
But eventually your mom will give you the snack that she should have known you wanted.
Don’t let them put your bad hair day on their Christmas card.
Take time to study geography.
Travis finds that his toe is a useful pointing device when discussing the Middle East.
Mitchell, we will save the Way of the Train for another blog. In the meantime, here is a boy and his toys… and his boys.
Dad: Sons, you need to use calculus for precise train maneuvering.
Elliot: C is for calculus, it’s good enough for me!
Travis: There are at least two trains on this table that I haven’t run past my tongue. Must rectify that at all cost!
This is what an airplane holding pattern looks like.
Sometimes everything’s a blur. Just laugh and go with it.
And try to be the one on top of the heap.

Finally, try to enlighten your family with pearls of wisdom. Here are a couple of Elliot’s recent sayings:
I put my money in a bank. A bank looks like a snack trap.
Mom said “Who did you play with today?” And Elliot said “I don’t know, you tell me.”
Dad said “Where do we live?” And Elliot said “Earth.”
Sometimes you have to keep them on their toes:

Dad: Why do you think bugs have antennae?
Elliot: Birthday cake!

Happy Autumn!

We went to Oktoberfest at our local Catholic church yesterday. This picture sums up the day’s activities. Lots of eating! Elliot had a hot dog and Travis had a pretzel. There were lots of games to play, Elliot made a wood project with his dad, and we went home with someone else’s balloon animal. Also Travis managed to take a nap in the stroller while the Bavarian band blasted polka music. It was a great day!

On Saturday we went to the Chicago Botanic Garden. There was a terrific train exhibit that we went to see. Afterward we walked around the garden. Elliot wanted to push Travis in his stroller. We saw a big ball of pumpkins. And then I saw a cutie pie sitting on his dad’s lap and had to snap a pic.

Travis is serious about bottle time.
This boy is almost as tall as the flag and pinwheel we have on our patio!
For someone who cries when I try to feed him vegetables, this one grabs foliage with gusto and shoves it in his mouth. I guess it’s fiber.
Elliot and I read Sheep In A Jeep and then made a craft. We made a sheep, a jeep, some mud, and a tree. Then Elliot acted out the book with the paper props. I think Elliot’s favorite part was using his scissors.

The Big Boy and the Little Brother

Here is a big boy.

He goes tinkle and poo-poo in a big potty. That’s what big boys do.
He likes to remind his brother of all the things that he, the big boy, can do that little babies, like his brother, cannot do.
But this morning I heard him singing songs while he waited for us to get him out of his crib. When I went into his room he was standing up in his crib so his brother could see him and he was singing to his brother every verse in Old MacDonald Had a Farm that he could think of. This big boy has a big heart for his little brother.

Peek a Boo! [and] The Student Has Become The Master

Look who I saw peeking at me over the stairs! I was so surprised I had to get the picture from both sides.

How did he do that? He’s only five months old! He should be sleeping all day and blowing spit bubbles. But this boy is ready for adventure! He’s ready to play with his big brother!
We had a block party last Sunday and the fire department came out. We got a tour of the fire truck.

And they turned the hydrant on. Don’t know if you can see Elliot’s face here but it is one of sheer joy.
Making mud pies.
Dad and Elliot saw the tall ships that visited Chicago. It was a hot day but lots of fun!
Elliot and I have conversations like this: “What color is my shirt? What color is the gate? What color is the other gate? What color is your shirt? What color is this thing?” And after I answer correctly he says “Mama, I know my colors!”

or this: “Mama, you are eating almonds. Mama, you are eating two almonds. Mama, we like almonds. Mama, almonds are yummy. Mama, we like almonds. Mama, you and I. Mama, you are putting that big cup in the cabinet. Mama, this is a jumping bean. Mama, I know all of my words.”

Big Weekend: Swing, Swim, and Thomas

Elliot was beside Travis for his first swing. Elliot got [deep voice] BIG UNDERDOGS and Travis got [high voice] little underdogs.

These brothers share a love for books. Here they are reading Cars and Trucks and Things that Go.
On your mark, get set….. !!
Travis had his first swim!
Today we went to a Day Out With Thomas at the Illinois Train Museum. The museum was an hour away so we stayed with friends last night and then saw Thomas today and then drove home. Here is Dad and Elliot when we were riding on Thomas. How exciting!
Mom and Travis were also excited to ride on Thomas! Whose thumb is that? 🙂
Elliot even found the rocks by the trains worth contemplation.
Here Elliot is getting a temporary Thomas tattoo.
Dad and Elliot in front of Thomas. Thomas’s eyes even moved.

One tired boy on a train.

Touring the train museum… the best part are all the ramps!

The artistry of growing up

Elliot is practicing his bike riding around the kitchen island. He just got on and took off!

We found this art project in the basement. We call it “Strewn Toilet Paper”
George looks on as Elliot makes marker masterpieces.
And now, dear family, we have come to the end of sweet Travis’s baby times. He is crawling. First he was just on his toes and pushing forward.
Checking out the handsome baby in the mirror!
Sitting up already!
Now he’s crawling on hands and knees. He is only five months old.
Maybe it’s because he’s such a good eater…

This week in pictures

Look at this cherub. He has big grins for everyone. One of his favorite delicacies is his own toes. Yum! We never thought we’d see the day when Elliot would feed a baby. What a super big brother! He has also started helping out in the kitchen. He can sort silverware and crack eggs. He also helps take stems off cherries and pit them. He says “pitch the cherries” instead of “pit the cherries.” Quote of the week: Fletch was making french toast. He said, “Elliot I”m making french toast!” Elliot said, “You’re making french toast, Dad! You’re making French toast! I’m making tinkle!” (Yes, everything Elliot says is an exclamation.) We adore these boys!
